Alinghi - The Swiss Americas Cup Team
Landlocked Nation - Sailing Success That a Swiss team would ever win the Americas Cup was until recently not something that anybody would even remotely believe. Then cam Ernesto Bertarelli, the richest man in Switzerland with a passion for sailing and set out to win the cup. The Swiss team beats the Kiwis In 2003 the Swiss team started for the first time, made it into the final and there beat the New Zealand team with the result of 5 : 0 to take the 'Ould Mug' the Americas Cup trophy home to Geneva. Defense of the Americas in Valencia, Spain In 2007 the Swiss team Alinghi was challenged to defend the cup - again against Team New Zealand and defende the Americas cup in a fascinating series that ended much closer than the final result of 5 : 2 would suggest. Next Americas cup event before the courts As has happened many times in the past, the rich men with the big egos who engage in this unique sailing challenge are battling in court to get some advantage that will allow them to defend or win the cup again. This time, an American challenger Larry Ellison with the Golden Gate Yacht Club are challenging the validity of the Spanish challenge and insist they are to be the challenger of records. 33rd Americas Cup ... Until these court issues are resolved, no futher cup can take place.
