Ancient customs in Switzerland - Fulehung Thun
Festival in the month of September Fulehung takes place on the last Monday in September. Fulehung is a folk festival with a lot aof comotion and fun. It's celebrated to remember the fool who's name was Fulehung. The story is that in a battle in the middle ages the soldiers of a goup of the Swiss army, made up of people from Thun, help to battle the French king in the Burgundian Wars in 1476. The court jester of Charles the Bold made fun of the the soldiers of Thun, he called them inefficient and lazy. So they went after him and caught him during the battle. He was brought to Thun and received severe punishement. Historical Background The soldiers of Thun received commendations for their valor during battle and the town of Thun was allowed to hold markets independently to thank them for their help in this battle. Also the emblem of Thun was adorned with a golden star to further thank the town. Fun and Attraction for Kids and Adults The festival is for kids and youths a bug attraction ad provides a reason for people originating from thun to go back to their town and meet old friends. Early in the morning the youths of Thun rush into the main street and up the castle hill, where they wait impatiently for their idol, Fulehung. The first one to find the Fulehung who is in hiding gets a symbolic 5 Swiss Francs. Below is an image of the Fulehung in the early morning.
