Bern - Capital of Switzerland

The 'unknown' capital

No, it's not Zurich :-) .... Bern isn't the largest town in Switzerland, nor the best know one of Switzerland, Zurich and Geneva beat Bern in reputation, but Bern is the official capital of Switzerland.

UNESCO World Cultural Heritage

So, Bern is the capital of Switzerland. And it's a town with a tremendous charme, located in a double bend of the river Aare, it has preserved it's medieval character and is one of the few cities in the word that are on the list of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

The old town is so well preserved, because the initial architecture left no real space for adding or changing things, the river Aare being a natural boundary on three sides. A shopping stroll under the arcades of these historical buildings is a real pleasure and even on a rainy day you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

The Swiss Parliament

Bern holds the parliament building with the Bundesplatz towards the citiy side and a great viewing platform behind the building, overlooking the outskirts of the town and pointing towards the alps. On a clear day this spot offers a breathtaking view! ...and no, ther is no fence around the Swiss parliament building, you just stroll around in the garden surrounding it. Matter of fact, the ministers (Bundersräte) do not walk around with body guards either, you can meet them in the streets, doing their shopping, just like a normal citizen. This is Switzerland :-).

Berner Münster

The Berner Münster (Bern Cathedral) is a great viewing spot to overlook the old town and see how our ancestors have conceived and built their towns - If you're not too afraid of heights and fit enough to climb the 254 narrow steps to the top.

There's plenty more to see in Bern, so go have a look!
