Geneva Car Show - The Annual Meeting Place For Car Enthusiasts

The 2008 Geneva car show has opened its doors and thousands of visitors from Switzerland and the neighouring countries flock to the exhibiton to see the latest in car development and the studies with futuristic models for the next few years.

CO2 more important than HP

What hits the eye in this years exhibition is that there are a lot more 'green' arguments that are directed at potential buyers. Instead of the number for horsepower (HP) at the BMW stand the number for the CO2 in the exhaust gases is shown.

Electric Cars and Hybrids

An other development is that most car makers show studies or market ready models that use electric motors alone or are hybrid cars with electric and gas / diesel driven engines combined, like i.e Lexus and Toyota offer already for some time.

Political pressure to reduce pollution

The reason for these developments are mostly political. The European Union wants to reduce CO2-production by 2012 to a maximum of 120g/km. This means that the car manufacturers need to reduce the consumption figures for their fleet of vehicles to only 4,5 liters per 100 kilometers on average. Most car producers are very far from these values and argue that it will not be possible to meet these limits by 2012

Indian maufacturer TATA enters small cars market

The Indian car manufacturer, until now mostly known for its robust trucks is entering the small car market with it's Nano model, a car that will cost around 2.500 Dollars and offers space for 4. The car is a no frills model and lacks some essential safety features like airbags, ABS, ESP, etc. TATA considers adding these for a European model that would then cost a bit more but still be very much cheaper than the other small cars offered up to now in the Eruopean market.

Despite pressure for more efficent cars - luxury car segment grows strongly

The CEO for Porsche, Ferdinand Piech, has mentioned that they see a two figure growth in the luxury segment, and that Porsche will be among the companies that actively participate in this boom.
