Luzern - Lucerne The Chapel Bridge

Wooden bridge with a history

Lucerne, the popular tourist destination in central Switzerland has one attraction that every tourist visits: The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke). This covered wooden bridge was built in 1333. The wood that was used then was deilverd 'free house' by a lage storm that had felled many trees which were then driven to the shores of the end of the lake, the Vierwaldstätersee.

Rebuilt in 1994 after a fire

After a disastrous fire that destroyed most of the wooden bridge in 1993. As the bridge is an important part of the image that Lucerne has in the world, and to preserve this heritage despite the accident, every effort was made to rebuild the bridge exactly as it had been before the fire.

Important part of the old city ramparts

Initially this bridge was not just a means to cross the river, but also formed part of the city ramparts, the defensive line of the city of Lucerne. Nowaday it's reserved for pedestrians only and it offers a great stroll across the water of the river Reuss.

The paintings inside the covered bridge

Around 1600 Lucerne started to embellish the bridge with paintings of religious, and later also day to day scenes, painted on wooden panels. Unfortunately, many of these paintings were lost in the fire of 1993, but some could be saved intact, and others were only burned lightly and could be repaired. If you happen to be in Lucerne, make sure you don't miss the bridge and the paintings!

How to get to Lucerne

Best plan to arrive at Zurich airport and from there take the train to Lucerne,
It's a drive of about one hour with trains departing frequently.

There's plenty more to see in Lucerne, so go have a look!
