Seven Steps to Save Gas

Save money and drive smarter!

With the gas price on the raise, more people are looking for ways to save on gas. Even if your car's engine can not be changed, you can influence how much gas is used when you drive. Here are a few easy to implement steps that can easily save you up to 10% or more.

Some of these steps are simple common sense, others will need a bit of training and a slight change of your habits. Give them a try and find out how quickly you'll save on your gas bill.

Do you really need to drive?

Ask yourself this question everytime you are about to take the car. Maybe you have a bike and could use the bike for short distances, or even walk?

Do you need to carry these weights?

Often you keep things in the car, that you rarely need, but simply are too lazy to remove. Check the trunk of your car and remove everything you don't need. Every kilo of weight that you carry in your car that is not needed adds to the gas consumption.

Tire pressure?

Tire pressure makes a big difference. A well inflated tire will consume much less, because there is less resistance on the road. Discuss with your mechanic by how much you can overinflate the tires and stay safe. Usually 0,5 athmospheres more is OK, but do discuss that before you change the pressure

Do you need the roof rack?

If you have a roof rack or a roof box mounted on top, take it off when you don't need it. This is unnecessary weight and it creates air drag.

Aircondition?

If you are driving with the A/C on at all times, you are consuming more gas. There are times of the year where the A/C is not needed, depending on where you live. Caution: Don't drive with an open window, when you are driving at higher speed. An open window creates drag and is even worse than the A/C!

Driving in high gear

If you are driving a car with manual shift, it's important to accelerate right and then stay in high gear. Shift early and push the accelerator enough for the car to speed up. Try to stay in high gear longer and drive with lower rpms.

Look ahead - Anticipate

By adapting a 'look ahead' drive style, you can take your foot off the accelerator early and let the car cruise in idle towards a red light or a traffic jam with slowed down traffic. By breaking as little as possible, you make better use of the energy you have used already.

This new driving style is really a philosophy, and it will take some time until you drive with the necessary feeling. This new style has a large savings potential.
