Technorama - The Swiss Science Center
The Technorama in Winterthur is a museum unlike any other in Switzerland. It's geared toward people who are curious and want to experiment themselves. The exhibits are mostly interactive and show some astonishing experiments that are understandable both for educated adults and very often also for even small kids. This makes the Technorama an ideal destination for the entire family. I love to visit and explore the various section periodiclly. In one visit you never manage to see everything the museum has to offer. Here are just a few of the fascinating exhibits around the atom: Translucent model of an atom This model of an atom in a translucent ball of about 1 meter diameter lets you get a feel for what an atom really is. The ratio of enlargement for this model is 10'000'000'000 : 1 ! And when you then see that core of the atom is only the size a light point of 0,01 mm diameter, it's hard to believe that this is where all the incredible energy of the atom lies. Scanning-Tunneling-Microscope for visitors Not everybody get's a chance to look through a scanning-tunneling-microscope, as these high tech instruments can not be found in the science shop around the corner... Here it's possible for visitors to actually scan the surface of a piece of graphite an to observe the individual atoms as they are layered one next to the other. ... and so there are many more fascinating exhibits just for this special exhibition that can be seen until the 25th of May 2008.
