Thun the portal to the Bernese Oberland
Medieval Town Thun is small medieval town located at the entrance to the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. Its old town is still pretty much intact and the central place below the Thun castle, with the citiy hall on one end and old medieval building all around is great example of how towns were built in the middle ages. Some of the ramparts, especially some towers and around the castel also a large chunk of the city wall are still preserved and can be visited. Schlossmuseum Thun The castle is a museum (Schlossmuseum Thun) and holds an impressive collection of medieval weapons and armoury. The view from top of the castle over the town and the lake to the alps is breathtaking! Market Days Market days are are Saturday on a weekly basis for food and one larger market with more goods, also clothing and other merchandise, every second Wendesday of the month. Especially the monthly market is a great day to visit Thun and meet some very original people. Farmers from the outlying smaller villages come to town to get what they need and meet. Great Beach! - Lake Thun Thun offers especially in summer a great beach: the public bath offers direct access to the lake and has artificial pools. The view over the lake to Eiger Mönch and Jungrau, the 3 major mountains of the Bernese Oberland and many of their peers needs to be seen, it's too beautiful for words.... How to reach Thun Thun can be reached in about 2 hours from either Geneva, Basel or Zurich where there are airport. There is a smaller airport in Berne, that one only accomodates local traffic. If you're in Switzerland, make sure you spend some time in Thun! For more details check the URL below with the offical guide for Thun.
